Costa Calida
The Costa Calida known as the warm coast stretches from San Pedro del Pinatar in the north to Aguilas in the south. Calida means warm and this region enjoys around 315 days of sunshine annually and an average temperature of 18 – 20 degrees.
Its a perfect place for sailing, windsurfing, diving or swimming in the warm crystal clear waters. Mar Menor, to the south east of Murcia is a coastal salt water lake, the largest in Europe, separated from the Mediterranean by the La Manga peninsula. Mar Menor means small sea its just seven metres at its deepest and during the summer months can rise to 5 degrees C higher than the sea – its shallow, calm waters makes it perfect for family activities.
The narrow La Manga del Mar peninsula houses a strip of fine hotels, homes and apartments. The famous La Manga Club overlooks the water. Nestled amongst the lemon groves, the club has three superb golf courses and one of Europe’s finest tennis centres. Its also home to a football training centre often used by international teams.
Murcia, the regions capital, was founded over a thousand years ago here you will find Moorish architecture, as well as fantastic art galleries and museums.the old town complements the modern city with chic stores, boutiques, world class restaurants and top level sporting events, from bullfighting to soccer. Murcia is one of the fastest growing cities in Spain.
Down the coast is Cartagena, a city with 3,000 years of astonishing history. Cartagena has one of the worlds largest natural ports. Further down the coast at Mazarron, you will find the enchanted city, a most unusual sight – a spectacular landscape where the elements have eroded the white sandstone into wonderful shapes.
The coastline offers some beautiful, quiet beaches with outstanding views. the area is unspoilt and tranquil, its an excellent place for diving especially off Aguilas
The main airports are Alicante and Murcia San Javier, with a new airport Covera due to be completed in 2007/8. Good road networks for easy access.
